Prague :- The bloodiest mass shooting in the history of the Czech Republic took place on Thursday when a lone shooter opened fire on a university building in downtown Prague leaving at least 15 people dead and over 20 injured, according to police and the city’s rescue agency
According to Prague Police Chief Martin Vondrasek, the shooting occurred in the philosophy department building of Charles University, where the gunman was a student. Officials claimed that the gunman passed away as well. His identity remains undisclosed
Authorities issued a warning that the death toll might increase, and Vondrasek reported that 24 people were hurt
The victims’ identities and the potential reason for the shooting at the Jan Palach Square building next to the Vltava River were not disclosed by the police. Investigators do not suspect a connection to any extremist ideology or groups, according to Vit Rakusan, the minister of the Czech interior.
According to Vondrasek, the gunman killed his father in his village of Hostoun, which is located just west of Prague, earlier in the day and had been preparing to take his own life, according to the police. He didn’t go into detail
The chief gave no additional details, other than to say that the gunman was a straight A student with no prior criminal history
Vondrasek stated that although the gunman had “devastating injuries,” it was unclear if he took his own life or was shot and killed by police. He also stated that there was “nothing to suggest that he had an accomplice.”
Legally in possession of many firearms, the shooter committed a “well thought out, horrible act,” according to Vondrasek.
“We mourn the loss of life of members of our university community, express our deepest condolences to all the bereaved and our thoughts are with all those affected by the tragedy,” a statement from Charles University said
Authorities at the institution declared that they would immediately increase security in university buildings
The location of the filming is in Jan Palach Square, a popular tourist destination in Prague’s Old Town, close to the Vltava River The charming Old Town Square, a renowned tourist destination with a Christmas market that draws thousands of people each year, is only a short stroll away.
Situated in a bustling part of town, down the hill from Prague Castle on a popular street carrying tourists to Old Town Square, police cordoned off the square and the area next to the building.
Images from the media showed students fleeing the building while raising their hands in the air, and some hiding from the assailant by perching on a ledge close to the roof
“We’ve always believed that this is not a problem for us Prague Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda told Czech Television, “It turns out that, regrettably, our world is also changing and the problem of the individual shooter is emerging here as well.”
Director of the Rudolfinum Gallery, a performance facility located across Palach Square, Petr Nedoma, claimed to have seen the gunman on Czech TV.
“I saw a young person on the gallery who had some weapon in his hand, like and automatic weapon, and shooting toward the Manes Bridge,” claimed the man. “Then I saw as he shot, put hands up and threw the weapon down on the street, it lay there on the pedestrian crossing,” he continued.
Ivo Havranek, 43, is another witness who told Reuters via Zoom that at first he assumed the “couple of bangs” he heard might have originated from a nearby movie set or from rowdy visitors.
“Suddenly, instructors and students were racing out of the building. I walked through the throng without realizing what was going on. “I wasn’t prepared to acknowledge that an incident of that nature could occur in Prague,” he remarked. He claimed he didn’t realize it was serious until he saw police officers brandishing automatic weapons
“They shouted at me to run.”
Petr Fiala, the prime minister, stated on X that he had canceled his trip to the east of the country and was on his way to Prague.
The Czech Republic has very little gun crime. In the eastern Czech city of Ostrava in December 2019, a 42-year-old gunman opened fire on six people in a hospital waiting area before escaping and taking his own life, according to authorities.
In 2015, at an Uhersky Brod restaurant, a guy shot eight people to death before taking his own life.
